Learning Irish is an act of devotion & sacred remembrance
Language is the lifeblood of a culture. In Irish, teanga is the word for language, which has the power to connect us with teaghlach (family/lineage) and tírghrá (love of country).
The Irish language has been in decline for centuries due to colonialism; especially the past few hundred years since An Gorta Mór (the Great Hunger) which was especially hard-hitting in rural, Irish-speaking areas of Ireland. A tide of emigration began before the famine, but this became an exodus during the famine years as people fleeing the country sought refuge abroad. More than 1.8 million Irish emigrated, and many left their language behind them.
Revitalizing the Irish language is a de-colonial act of devotion and sacred remembrance. Even learning a few words in Irish brings healing to our ancestors, and helps to preserve our cultural identity for future generations.

When we reclaim the language of our ancestors, we remember who we are
The Irish language has a spirit that’s rooted in the distant past, going back to the Iron Age and the Irish Celts. Old Irish emerged in the 5th century, which is the first time the language was written down.
Take a moment to think about all of your ancestors who spoke this language over the centuries. Irish Gaeilge was part of their identity, and to reclaim this language in honor of them is to claim a powerful place in your lineage. It’s a way of honoring the past, and healing the wound of assimilation and colonization.
A deeply profound remembrance can take place as a result of this learning, which can help to revitalize the ancient roots of who you are and where you come from.
