The Bones of our Ancestors are Calling us Home

Deep in the memory of the land, our Irish ancestors are stirring awake and calling their long lost granddaughters home.

Home to Ireland. Home to the wild. Home to the bones.

The wisdom and medicine of our ancestors has never been lost—only buried and forgotten. In this time of great remembering, these wise ones are calling us to revive the ancestral lifeways of land and lineage, and the deep wisdom of our heritage.

As women of the Irish diaspora, this remembering is a return to who we truly are. A reclamation of where we come from. An honoring of the ones who’ve gone before.

Through craft, culture, ceremony, and song, you’ll tend to the bones of your lineage, and come home to the sacred roots of who you are.

What makes Tending the Bones unique?

This experience is not your average tourist experience.

This is an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the ancient and emergent culture of Ireland in a spiritual, feminine way that uplifts the matriarchal magic of our heritage.

Tara, Aoife, and Sionnáin are dreaming women who’ve journeyed with the ancestors for many years. Each of them will bring a unique magic and medicine to the retreat, rooted in the old ways of Ireland.

Activities & Excursions

We have a wide variety of activities planned for you, with a special focus on connecting to the land and the ancestors.

Bealtaine Fire Ceremony

Our retreat is taking place just after Bealtaine—an ancient fire festival that celebrates the beginning of summer. Together, we’ll gather around the fire and you’ll learn about the ancestral folk traditions associated with this Irish festival. One of these traditions includes a smoke blessing, which you’ll receive as part of the ceremony. You’ll also be guided to connect with the spirit of your lineage, and set intentions for the retreat.

We’ll visit an ancestral iron-age roundhouse, which is the traditional dwelling of our ancestors. The roundhouse holds the memory of a time when our grandmothers lived in communion with the fire, the water, the plants, and the spirits of place. Outside the roundhouse, we’ll dream with the ancestors to receive the wisdom of your ancient grandmothers.

This is one of Ireland’s most prolific areas of natural beauty, with a very ancient history. Archeological evidence has been discovered here going back to 10,500 BC—to the very earliest evidence of human settlement in Ireland. Together, we’ll explore this wild landscape and visit a sacred well at Lough Avalla Farm, surrounded by hazel and hawthorn trees. We’ll also visit standing stones and a cairn, where the ancient ancestors can be felt.

Tara, Sionnain & Aoife all carry songs of both Irish traditional and new/of this time. We will guide and provide simple chants to connect with the language, land and ancestors throughout our time, and song will be a strong anchor and presence throughout this retreat.

We will be guided by a local guide to meet the medicine of the sea, our precious native seaweeds. We will gather some seaweed and it will feed and nourish our bodies in our ‘’wild food’’ experience at a nearby site.

Towards the end of our journey, we will quest in ceremony with the ancestors & deep holding of the land. Together as women we will go into the darkness of the Grandmother, journeying into a sweat house, known as Teach Allais in Irish. This is one of our ancestral wellness practices, and we will be descending into the darkness of the womb-like sweat, in a ‘’reimagining’’ of our ancient tradition. This is a time to deeply pray to the ancestors and remember from the depth of our bones.

We will be guided by a guest facilitator to weave a simple willow basket or item, with the intention of engaging the ancestral memory in our hands. Traditional craft is a gateway to ancestral connection as these lifeways were so inherent to how we lived our lives up until very recently.

In addition to the activities above, you’ll also learn tree and plant wisdom, and teachings about the Ogham (Ireland’s runic alphabet). We’ll share stories from Ireland’s mythology and folklore, and you’ll also get to experience some traditional Irish music and dance.

Your Guides

TARA BRADING

Tara is an ancestral educator from the so-called United States, specializing in guiding women from the diaspora into connection with their Irish ancestry and heritage.

She’s been on a journey of sacred remembrance and reclamation for over fifteen years, honoring the earth based feminine wisdom left in her blood and bones. She believes that this wisdom is awakening inside so many of us in these times of transformation and change, and her greatest passion is connecting women to the wisdom of their ancestors.

In 2018 during a minor health crisis, Tara went to Ireland for two months—a pilgrimage that changed her life forever. Upon her return to the so-called United States, she immersed herself in deep study, training, and apprenticeship with Irish elders, the Irish Goddesses, and her own ancestors.

She holds a special affinity for the ancient ancestors—the ones with bare feet on the earth, who sang to the fire, and communed with the spirits. She’s also dedicated to the Goddesses of Ireland, who hold important feminine medicine for women in these times.

She’s honored and humbled to share this ancestral wisdom with you, so you can connect to your Irish lineage and heritage in meaningful and magical ways.

AOIFE LOWDEN

Aoife Lowden is a guide and facilitator of courses, ceremonies & gatherings which aim to support in building relationship rooted in land-based ancestral wisdom & community. Through story, music, craft & healing ceremony, Aoife weaves together threads of ancestral remembrance rooted in the earth-based traditional and emergent culture of Ireland and Scotland. She has been co-creating land-based events for over a decade.

Aoife creates spaces rooted in wild & ancient wisdom, whilst allowing the space for our emerging culture to come through & evolve. Fire is at the heart of Aoife’s offerings, and she believes that gathering around the fire is the healing remedy which the world is craving.

Aoife founded Slí na Sinsear where she weaves offerings inspired by the ancient lands of Éire and Alba, often in collaboration with her community. She teaches online and in-person. Aoife is passionate about reviving & bringing awareness to our endangered indigenous cultural practices, such as that of the Teine Eiginn, (Neid fire) and Teach Allais (Sweat House). She was born and raised in Ireland but currently lives in the Scottish Highlands where she co-manages ‘’The Shieling Collective’’.

Sionnáin (Michelle Shannon)

Sionnáin is a singer, songcarrier, musician, guide and guardian from the West Coast of Ireland.

Over 10 years ago she landed at the Hill of Uisneach on Summer Solstice, met by elders and guardians honouring the old ways, this special moment propelled her path into a deep connection with the power of place on the island of Éiriú.

This was a profound catalyst, opening up her heart and journey to coming into relationship with the elemental and cyclical ways of life, which naturally opened up a deeper communion with the ancestors and guardians of the land, the Tuatha Dé Danann.

Sitting around the hearth and remembering the power of prayer, has brought her path into a powerful living relationship and conversation with how she can tend the children’s fire, as an Irish woman who will one day become an ancestor.

Ceremony, song and community have shaped her journey and supported her to remember the ways of the ancient ones, the grandmother’s wisdom and the ancient ways of the Caoineadh (ancient keening tradition of Ireland). Being a keeper of thresholds, is at the core of her Soul’s journey and place within the village she is remembering along the way.

Words of Praise

From Aoife & Tara’s Sovereignty Goddess Retreat 2024

“Literally for 35 years I dreamed of doing a tour of Ireland’s sacred, spiritual sites. Somehow I found Tara and her Roundhouse program in the past months, synchronicities happened, and my dream became reality. Tara and Aoife organized this ineffably powerful & beautiful retreat, an experience of sacred sites related to the Sovereign Goddesses, and on the theme of Sovereignty.

This experience was far more than I could ever have dreamed or wished for. EVERYTHING was perfection. On paper, it all sounded so exciting but to live it?!? The experience changed me deeply. The past five years have been years of unrelenting trauma, loss and solitude. I emerged from this experience knowing I am not alone, and feeling rooted. It was an experience I will NEVER forget. The seeds of which are only growing in me and my life.

I’m forever grateful to Tara and Aoife for the opportunity, experience and for their generosity.”

Words of Praise

From Aoife & Tara’s Sovereignty Goddess Retreat 2024

“Tara and Aoife are grounded in integrity and each possesses wisdom and authority far beyond their years. The effects of my time on retreat have felt nothing short of seismic. What’s awakened in me is a remembrance of a new way (which is actually an ancient way) of being in relationship with myself, others, and the land.

For generations, members of the Irish diaspora have wandered adrift in the US, disconnected from the land of our ancestors, many of whom left Ireland under pressure to assimilate and leave everything from the Old World behind. For countless others who boarded the ships for a better life, the sorrow of emigration was so great they simply couldn’t bring themselves to speak about their homeland.

My personal experience of this collective forgetting is that I struggled for decades, severed from my own lineage, shopping the rituals of other cultures, seeking healing through countless modalities, courting approval from exploitative systems, starving for something to fill the nameless emptiness inside.

I was not prepared for the deep-rooted sense of belonging and courage that emerged upon remembering that I am a daughter of Ériu.  The days I spent with Aoife and Tara filled that emptiness in a way that nothing else has ever quite been able to do. Our time together allowed me to feel into the rich, meaningful wisdom of my ancestors, and begin to glimpse my role in continuing their legacy. The lessons I learned and the inner knowings I accessed continue to unfold inside me—rippling out into discernible changes in the way I relate to others with more agency, clarity, and confidence.

If the world has dumped messages on you about what it means to be a woman, or what it means to be a person of Irish descent; if you’re increasingly aware that those messages feel neither fair nor true; if the roles you have been slotted into by society feel increasingly unbearable—may a retreat with Aoife and Tara offer you a portal through which you might begin to hear another way.”

Frequently Asked Questions

This experience is specifically for folks with Irish ancestry. Because there’s going to be a strong focus on connecting with our ancestors, this specificity is important.

The group will be women-focused and women-led, and we warmly welcome all who experience life in a female body, including non-binary individuals.

There will be 15 participants in this retreat, with 3 facilitators. We’ll spend time together as a group of 18 women and femmes, but we’ll also spend time in smaller groups of 5, with a facilitator leading each group.

If you find it difficult to connect in larger groups, these smaller groups of 5 will be an intimate place to form deeper connections and friendships. This will also be a soft and inviting place for you to share and ask questions.

Your accommodation for 7 nights at Slieve Aughty; your meals during that time, except for any instances when we eat away from the lodgings, which will be paid for separately; all of the excursions, activities, and experiences (including transportation) during the retreat; transportation from Shannon airport on May 7th, and back to the airport on May 14th. You will also receive two online calls with Tara, Aoife, and Sionnáin, one before the retreat and one after.

Yes, these things can happen. Please know that we cannot offer refunds, and therefore we highly recommend you purchase good travel insurance to protect against rare incidents like this!

Some of our excursions will include hiking and physical activity. Our longest hike will be 2 hours round trip, and likely won’t be suitable for people with injuries, or who have difficulty walking. If you have questions or concerns about the physical demand of our excursions, please get in touch.

The weather in Ireland is unpredictable, and temperatures in May can range from 9-15°C (48-59°F). Bring lots of layers and waterproofs, as you never know when it’s going to rain! A good rain jacket is highly recommended.

We will be hiking outdoors, so please bring suitable footwear. Expect mud and rain, and uneven ground. Hiking boots are a great option if you have them.

If you’re coming to Ireland from abroad, make sure to bring a plug converter. Type G plugs are used in Ireland, which have three-pronged rectangular pin plugs.

Other than these practical items, you might like to bring special items to contribute to our collective altar space for the retreat. This might include photos of ancestors, natural items, or other spiritual items that feel important to you.
